CSUN sound classThis exercise consists of an exterior scene involving boom, wireless lav, and plant mic. It is a good opportunity to work with battery powered mixers, long booms, windscreens, and exterior conditions.

The scene opens on a grassy plot, under a tree, in front of the building. A group of students are standing around, complaining about how they got ripped off in their Film Festival Accommodations. Their "room" is literally just a place to camp. All of the other paid attendees are apparently enjoying the festivities inside the building, but these "travel bargain hunters" have been duped. Their discount package was "close to the action" (but not part of the action), spacious (as a park could be), great for seeing hundreds of stars (just not the Hollywood kind), and so on.

This group shot would be covered by long shotgun boomed overhead.

One of the students is sent to check out what is going on in the main building. Student runs a short distance to a window and peers inside. The student describes all of the Festival activities he can see. Covered by wireless lav. The wireless should not be open until the student is no longer covered by the boom.

The group of students interacting with the student by the window is an opportunity to mix two microphones and pay attention to perspective.

The students turn around and gesture. Coming down the main path from afar is the Hotel Manager, an irritating foreign-accented fellow who has no sympathy for the students. The students run over to intercept him and complain, but the Manager just brushes them off with curt answers and continues heading for the entrance to the building. The lone student who earlier ran off to the window re-joins his fellow students.

At this point, the wireless is not needed, and all of the students should be covered by the boom.

They follow him to the door, but the Manager slips inside and locks the glass doors behind him. The students, still locked outside, want him to explain things. But the Manager only replies that they got the discount package that they paid for, with spacious room, and close to the stars. Finally, the Manager exits down the hall, leaving the disgruntled students outside.

A microphone has been planted inside of the building, at the doorway, in order to pick up the dialogue from the Manager once he is inside. The sene is covered by a combination of boom mic (exterior) and plant mic (interior).

Use this exterior to emphasize safety. Talk about the importance of hats, sunscreen, and bottled water. Pay attention to cord management, unwanted foot traffic, background noise, equipment security, and so on.
