DaVinci Resolve 15 (beta) is a totally professional video, audio, color timing, and FX software bundle from Blackmagic Design -- and it's FREE to download!

That's right... FREE. And you do not have to sit through a timeshare sales pitch to get it. DaVinci Resolve 15 (beta) is the latest version of their very sophisticated software platform intended to compete against the other "big platforms" currently used by the professional industry. The software includes video editing, color correction (which DaVinci is famous for), video effects, full audio editing/mixing/ADR/Foley, and export. For PC or MAC.

There are two versions available for download: the FREE version and the STUDIO version. The Studio version does cost $300, and is intended for collaborative editing whereby different editors can all work directly on the same project simultaneously. The free version is intended for a single user. In terms of power and features, the free version does most of  the same stuff as the paid version except for some 3D tools and more powerful visual effects. (If you are working on a big project with lots of uber high quality requirements -- I am sure that you can afford the $300. For the rest of us, FREE is good.)

My only complaint is that Blackmagic is not big on instruction manuals, so you do have to search the internet for tutorials. There is a huge reference manual (over twelve hundred pages or so) for Resolve 14, along with a "what's new in 15" supplement. But there are lots of instructional videos on YouTube to get you started without all that reading!

As an independent filmmaker, editor, or sound designer -- this is great software. But for getting work at a studio, you should still study up on AVID Media Composer, Pro Tools, Izotope RX. (And some readers will also add Premiere, Audition, and Final Cut to the list.)

However, this bundle from Blackmagic which includes their picture editing module, Fusion FX, DaVinci color, and Fairlight Audio is really powerful and puts a ton of professional editing tools at your fingertips.

To download, just go to https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/  and scroll al the way to the bottom of the (very long) screen.

Since FilmTVsound.com does kind of specialize in audio, I took a keen interest in their Fairlight Audio module. I must admit that I am extremely impressed with what they have done. It is a lot more streamlined and user friendly than Pro Tools, but do expect a learning curve. For those who are Pro Tools conversant, the transition will not be difficult. But for those getting into audio editing from scratch -- it is complex. The audio software is designed to provide full capability to a Hollywood sound designer used to working with Pro Tools. Fairlight does offer some included plug-ins and some very useful noise reduction tools. But what blew me away was their built-in capability to provide ADR/Foley recording with professional bells & whistles for creating and managing cues.

Here is a link to a very good YouTube presentation about their audio:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH6HnX53vpA

Just because Blackmagic is willing to market their software by putting it into the hands of as many serious filmmakers as possible in order to carve out a share in the marketplace, do not falsely assume that it is a "cheap" wanna-be program. I am sure that the prices will go up quite a bit once a lot of filmmakers adopt Resolve for their workflow. So get it "free" while you can.
