NAMM 2015 Anaheim Conv Ctr was created by Fred Ginsburg

The NAMM tradeshow takes place this Thursday thru Sunday, Jan 22-25, 2015, at the Anaheim Convention Center.

NAMM stands for National Association of Music Manufacturers -- but in simple words it is the convention of the audio instruments & recording industry. The entire convention center is filled with exhibits ranging from world famous guitar manufacturers to the latest post production DAW software. Attendees include professional musicians (some of them celebrity), audio engineers, dealers, manufacturers, and trade media.

Unlike NAB, this show does not stress film or video production/post-production officially -- but because of its proximity to Hollywood, some of the exhibits do include our industry.

Whereas NAB is open to anyone who can hit an enter key on their computer, NAMM is highly restricted and difficult to obtain free passes for. However, you can purchase badges for $25 onsite (usually).

Those of us who do receive free passes to the exhibits obtain them through direct contact with one of the major exhibitors (who are all allowed to give out only a couple dozen passes). Sometimes you can request badges from a major music industry retailer, but usually you need to know someone at the factory level.

An exception is made for Educators; sometimes these badges are free and sometimes they are only $25.

If you do show up at the last minute without a badge, try the following ruse. Go to a badge pick-up kiosk and ask for yours. When they cannot find your name in the computer, act surprised and slightly upset. Control your anger, but appear very unhappy about this situation. Calmly insist that you did register online and had received a confirmation, but did not know that you had to bring a copy with you. Say that you registered as an Educator. Ask to speak with a Manager, if necessary. Sometimes they will just print out a badge for you; or they may ask you for $25.

Note that you cannot use another person's badge, since they do check picture ID's at every entrance.
