Wrangling lots of mics during a performance was created by Fred Ginsburg

When wrangling multiple microphones on a live mix or live shoot, it can become confusing when attempting to keep track of all of the mics on the set.

To begin with, arrange the inputs across your mixing console to match the left-right positioning of the mics across your line of vision. In other words, as your eye pans from left to right across the set, the mic assignments to your board should follow suit.

For example, imagine a talk-show set: (way off to the left) Announcer; (on the couch from left to right) Guest01, Guest02, Guest03; (desk) Host; (way off to the right) Bandleader. Their respective mics would be located on my board in the exact same order, thus making it easy for me find each person's mic fader.

On shows where there may be a number of handheld mics, and especially if those handheld mics may be used by different performers over the course of the program, I color code each mic by using a different colored windscreen and/or by taping colored bands to the handle of the mic.
